What the forex session times does
The forex market runs 24 hours on weekdays, but the useful hours are far narrower. Volume, spread and volatility all cluster around session opens and the London–New York overlap, and short-expiry trading depends on movement.
The clock above shows all four major sessions against your local time, marks which are currently open, and highlights the overlap window. It also lists the pairs that are most active in each session, since trading GBP/USD during the Tokyo session is a different market than trading it at the London open.
If you only trade a few hours a week, trade the overlap. It is the single highest-quality window for binary options and short-term forex.
The formula, explained
Overlap = the hours where two sessions are simultaneously open
- Sydney
- — 21:00–06:00 UTC — quiet, AUD and NZD pairs
- Tokyo
- — 00:00–09:00 UTC — JPY pairs, orderly ranges
- London
- — 07:00–16:00 UTC — highest volume of the day
- New York
- — 12:00–21:00 UTC — news-driven, USD pairs
The London–New York overlap (12:00–16:00 UTC) carries the largest share of daily volume. Daylight saving shifts these by an hour in each region at different dates, so use the live clock rather than a memorised table.
A real set of numbers
| Session | UTC hours | Volatility | Best pairs | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 21:00–06:00 | Low | AUD/USD, NZD/USD | Range strategies, 15m expiry |
| Tokyo | 00:00–09:00 | Low–medium | USD/JPY, AUD/JPY | Range and mean reversion |
| London | 07:00–16:00 | High | EUR/USD, GBP/USD | Breakouts, 5m expiry |
| London/NY overlap | 12:00–16:00 | Highest | EUR/USD, Gold | Trend and 1–5m expiry |
| New York late | 16:00–21:00 | Medium | USD/CAD, indices | Continuation setups |
Four hours a day — the overlap — produce most of the tradeable movement. Trading the midday lull with short expiries is fighting the clock for no reason.
When to use it — and when not to
Use it when
- Planning which hours of the day to trade around your job.
- Choosing pairs that will actually move during the hours you are available.
- Deciding on expiry length: fast sessions allow shorter contracts.
- Working out why a strategy that works in the morning fails in the afternoon.
Don't rely on it when
- You are trading OTC weekend assets, which follow the broker's synthetic feed, not real session hours.
- A major news release is due — the calendar overrides session logic.
Forex session times questions, answered
+What is the best time to trade binary options?
The London–New York overlap, 12:00–16:00 UTC. Volume peaks, spreads tighten and moves have follow-through, which is what short expiries need.
+What time does the forex market open?
It opens with Sydney at 21:00 UTC on Sunday and closes with New York at 21:00 UTC on Friday, running continuously in between.
+Can I trade during the Asian session?
Yes, but adapt. Asian hours favour range and mean-reversion setups on JPY and AUD pairs with longer expiries; breakout strategies mostly fail there.
+Does daylight saving change session times?
Yes, and Europe, the US and Australia switch on different dates, so overlaps shift by an hour a few times a year. The live clock accounts for it.
