Forex money management rules
Strategies decide when to enter; money management decides whether you are still trading next month. These six rules are simple, and most blown accounts break at least one of them.

- Risk a fixed small percentage per trade, commonly 0.5–2%.
- Calculate lot size from the stop-loss distance every time.
- Set a daily or weekly loss limit and stop when it is hit.
- Losses grow harder to recover the deeper they get.
Six rules that protect an account
- 1Fix your risk per trade
Pick a percentage (for example 1%) and keep it constant.
- 2Size from the stop
Lot size = risk amount ÷ (stop pips × pip value).
- 3Aim for at least 1:1.5
Planned reward should usually exceed planned risk.
- 4Set a daily loss limit
For example, stop after losing 3% in a day.
- 5Keep leverage low
High leverage is a ceiling, not a target.
- 6Never add to a loser
Doubling down turns one mistake into a disaster.
1% risk on a $1,000 account
Risk per trade = $10. Your EUR/USD stop is 25 pips. At about $1 per pip for 0.1 lot, 25 pips costs $25 — too much. 0.04 lot costs about $10, which matches the plan.
Ten losses in a row at 1% leaves roughly $904. Ten losses at 10% leaves about $349. Small risk keeps you in the game long enough to improve.
| Risk per trade | After 5 losses | After 10 losses |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | $951 | $904 |
| 2% | $904 | $817 |
| 5% | $774 | $599 |
| 10% | $590 | $349 |
Why deep drawdowns are dangerous
A 10% loss needs about an 11% gain to recover. A 25% loss needs 33%. A 50% loss needs 100%. This is why protecting capital matters more than chasing big wins.
Make the rules automatic
Risk %, daily limit and max trades, before the session starts.
Track whether you followed the rules, not just profit.
Look for rule breaks; they cost more than bad entries.

Effective leverage should stay low; the lot size calculator keeps exposure tied to a small risk amount whatever leverage the account offers.
+Is money management more important than strategy?
Both matter, but poor money management can wipe out even a good strategy during a normal losing streak.
