How forex brokers make money
Brokers are businesses. Knowing how yours earns money helps you compare costs honestly and understand why some offers — like huge bonuses or 'zero fees' — are not as free as they sound.

- Most income comes from the spread, commission and overnight swap.
- Market makers (B-book) can take the other side of client trades.
- STP/ECN (A-book) brokers pass trades to liquidity providers and earn on volume.
- Many brokers use a hybrid of both models.
The main ways brokers earn
| Source | How it works |
|---|---|
| Spread | Difference between buy and sell price; you pay it on every trade. |
| Commission | A fixed fee per lot, common on 'raw spread' accounts. |
| Swap | Overnight financing charge, including a broker markup. |
| Other fees | Inactivity, withdrawal or currency-conversion fees. |
Market maker vs STP/ECN
The broker fills your order internally and may profit when clients lose. Regulated market makers must still treat clients fairly and execute properly.
Orders are passed to banks or liquidity providers. The broker earns from spreads or commissions regardless of whether you win.
Many brokers route some clients A-book and others B-book depending on size and behaviour.
What this means for you
- 1Compare total cost
Spread + commission + swap across your normal trading times, not advertised minimums.
- 2Prefer strong regulation
Rules on execution and client-money segregation matter more than the business model.
- 3Be wary of 'free'
Bonuses and zero-fee claims are paid for somewhere — read the conditions.
- 4Test withdrawals
A broker that pays out promptly and transparently is a good sign.
Risk notice
Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.
If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.
Frequently asked questions
+Is a market maker broker bad?
Not automatically. Well-regulated market makers must follow execution and fairness rules. Unregulated ones carry more risk.
+What is an ECN account?
An account with raw, variable spreads plus a commission, where orders are matched with liquidity providers.
+Do brokers want me to lose?
B-book brokers can profit from client losses, which is why regulation, transparency and withdrawals matter.
