Moving averages for forex beginners
A moving average smooths out price so the trend is easier to see. It will not predict the future, but it is one of the simplest ways to keep beginners trading with the trend instead of against it.

- An SMA weights every candle equally; an EMA reacts faster to recent prices.
- Price above a rising 200-period average suggests a longer uptrend.
- Averages can act as moving support or resistance in trends.
- All moving averages lag — they confirm, they do not forecast.
SMA vs EMA
| SMA (simple) | EMA (exponential) | |
|---|---|---|
| Calculation | Average of the last N closes | Gives more weight to recent closes |
| Speed | Slower, smoother | Faster, more responsive |
| Common use | Long-term trend (200 SMA) | Short-term timing (20 EMA) |
20, 50 and 200
Short-term momentum; price often pulls back to it in strong trends.
Medium trend; widely watched on 4-hour and daily charts.
Long-term trend filter; above it many traders only look for buys.
How traders use moving averages
- 1Trend filter
Only buy when price is above a rising 200; only sell below a falling 200.
- 2Dynamic support/resistance
In trends, wait for a pullback to the 20 or 50 and a confirming candle.
- 3Crossovers
A faster average crossing a slower one signals momentum change — late, but clear.
Where moving averages fail
In sideways markets, price chops back and forth through the average and crossovers give repeated false signals. If the 200 is flat and price keeps crossing it, the market is ranging — switch to support and resistance instead.
Do not stack five averages hoping for certainty. One trend filter plus clear levels and risk control is enough.
Frequently asked questions
+Which moving average is best for forex?
There is no single best; the 200 SMA is a common trend filter and the 20 EMA a common short-term guide.
+Is EMA better than SMA?
EMA reacts faster but gives more false signals; SMA is smoother but slower.
+What is a golden cross?
When the 50-period average crosses above the 200-period, often read as a shift to a longer uptrend.
