Copy trading: how it works and the risks to know

Copy trading automatically mirrors another trader's positions in your account. It can look like an easy shortcut, but you take on all of their risk — and you still lose money when they do.

Key takeaways
  • You copy losses as well as wins, in real time.
  • High recent returns often come from high risk, not skill.
  • Martingale and grid strategies can look smooth until one large loss.
  • Fees, slippage and different account sizes mean your results differ from theirs.
How it works

The basics

You choose a 'signal provider' on a copy-trading platform and allocate money. When they open or close a trade, the same trade is placed in your account, scaled to your allocation. Providers usually earn a share of profits, a subscription or volume-based fees.

Risks

The risks people underestimate

Survivorship bias

Leaderboards show the traders who are winning now; many that blew up are no longer listed.

Hidden martingale

Doubling-down strategies produce smooth equity curves until a long losing streak wipes the account.

Drawdown mismatch

A provider comfortable with a 50% drawdown may not match your tolerance.

Execution differences

Slippage and timing mean copied trades don't always match the provider's fills.

Checklist

Questions before copying anyone

  1. 1
How long is the track record?

Prefer at least a year of history across different market conditions.

  2. 2
    What is the maximum drawdown?

Large past drawdowns will happen again.

  3. 3
    Do losing trades get closed?

Many open losing trades held for weeks is a warning sign.

  4. 4
Can I set my own stop?

Use an equity stop or allocation limit if the platform offers one.

Risk notice

Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.

If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+Is copy trading legal?

It depends on your country and the platform's licence. RBI does not permit Indian residents to fund overseas forex platforms, and SBP treats offshore forex/CFD platforms as illegal for Pakistani residents.

+Can I lose more than I invest in copy trading?

That depends on the broker's negative balance protection. Check before funding.

+Is copy trading passive income?

No. It's still trading with real risk; monitor it actively.
