Forex drawdown and recovery, explained with numbers

Drawdown is how far an account falls from its highest point. The maths is unforgiving: the deeper the drop, the bigger the gain needed just to get back to where you were.

Key takeaways
  • Recovery needed = loss ÷ (1 − loss). A 20% loss needs a 25% gain; 50% needs 100%.
  • Losing streaks are normal even for good strategies — plan for them.
  • Small fixed risk per trade keeps drawdowns survivable.
  • A daily or weekly loss limit stops a bad day turning into a blown account.

How risk per trade shapes drawdown

Ten losses in a row sounds rare, but over hundreds of trades it can happen even with a decent win rate.

Rules

Keeping drawdown under control

  1. 1
    Fix risk per trade

Choose a small % and size every trade with the lot size calculator.

  2. 2
    Set a daily loss limit

Stop trading for the day after a set loss, e.g. 2–3 losing trades.

  3. 3
    Cut size in drawdown

Many traders halve risk after a 10% drawdown until they recover.

  4. 4
    Review, don't revenge

Check the journal for broken rules before trading again.

Risk notice

Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.

If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+What is a normal drawdown in forex?

It depends on the strategy and risk, but keeping maximum drawdown under about 10–20% is a common goal for disciplined traders.

+Is drawdown measured from my deposit or my peak?

From the account's highest point (peak equity), not from the original deposit.

+Should I increase size to recover faster?

That usually deepens drawdown. Recovery is safer with the same or smaller risk.
