Candlestick patterns for forex trading

Candlesticks show who controlled each period — buyers or sellers. On forex they work best as confirmation at a level you already marked, not as stand-alone signals.

Key takeaways
  • Location beats shape: a hammer at support means more than a hammer mid-range.
  • Use the 1-hour, 4-hour or daily chart; 1-minute candles are mostly noise on forex.
  • Forex trades around the clock, so daily candles depend on your broker's server close — usually New York 5pm.
Context

What makes forex candles different

Because forex is continuous during the week, gaps are rare except at the Monday open. That means patterns built on gaps, like the abandoned baby, appear far less often than in stocks. Body and wick patterns — engulfing, pin bars, stars — are the workhorses.

Daily candles are cut at the broker's server time. Brokers using New York close (17:00 New York) give five clean daily candles per week; others may show a small Sunday candle that distorts patterns.

Reversal

Reversal patterns to know first

Hammer / pin bar

Long lower wick rejecting support. Wait for the next candle to close higher.

Shooting star

Long upper wick rejecting resistance after a rise.

Bullish engulfing

A green body fully covering the prior red body at support.

Morning star

Three-candle bottom: strong drop, small indecision candle, strong rise.

Continuation

Continuation and momentum

Three white soldiers show sustained buying; a series of strong-bodied candles after a breakout confirms participation. In a trend, small inside candles that resolve in the trend direction often offer lower-risk entries.

Process

A 4-step candlestick checklist

  1. 1
    Mark the level

Support, resistance or a prior swing on the 4-hour or daily chart.

  2. 2
    Wait for the pattern

Let the candle close; patterns change until then.

  3. 3
    Confirm

Next candle in the expected direction, or a break of the pattern's high/low.

  4. 4
    Size and place the stop

Stop beyond the wick; size with the lot size calculator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+Do candlestick patterns work in forex?

They describe buying and selling pressure, which exists in any market. They are more useful combined with levels, trend and session timing than on their own.

+Which timeframe is best for candlesticks in forex?

The 1-hour, 4-hour and daily charts filter out much of the noise found on very short timeframes.
