Forex trading for beginners: a step-by-step guide

Most beginners start with a strategy video and a live account. This guide reverses the order: understand the market, protect your capital, then build a simple plan you can repeat and review.

By the TradeFather education team · Updated 27 Oct 2026 · Educational content, not financial advice

Key takeaways
  • Start with one or two liquid pairs and one session instead of watching everything.
  • Every trade needs three numbers before entry: entry, stop-loss and position size.
  • Practise on demo until your journal shows a consistent process, not just a lucky week.
  • Use regulated, locally permitted venues — rules differ in India and Pakistan.
Roadmap

The 7-step beginner roadmap

  1. 1
    Understand pairs and prices

Know base vs quote currency and what a pip is.

  2. 2
    Check what is permitted locally

Use recognised exchanges or properly licensed providers.

  3. 3
    Pick 1–2 pairs

EUR/USD or GBP/USD are liquid; Indian residents use exchange-listed INR pairs.

  4. 4
    Pick a session

London and the London–New York overlap fall in the afternoon and evening for India and Pakistan.

  5. 5
    Write simple rules

Trend direction, entry trigger, stop-loss location and target.

  6. 6
    Size every trade

Risk a small fixed percentage, calculated from the stop distance.

  7. 7
    Journal and review weekly

Record screenshots, reasons and results; change one thing at a time.

Your first plan

A simple trend-pullback plan to practise

On the 1-hour chart, decide the trend: higher highs and higher lows is up, lower highs and lower lows is down. Only look for trades in that direction.

Wait for price to pull back to a previous support or resistance area. Look for a clear rejection candle — for example a hammer or bullish engulfing in an uptrend — before entering.

Place the stop beyond the rejection candle's wick, target at least the recent swing high, and size the trade so the stop equals your fixed risk. This is a practice framework, not a promise of results.

Risk

Why position size matters more than the strategy

If you risk 10% per trade, five losses in a row — common for any strategy — cut the account by about 41%. At 1% per trade, the same streak costs under 5%, and you are still able to learn from it.

Risk per tradeAfter 5 lossesAfter 10 losses
1%−4.9%−9.6%
2%−9.6%−18.3%
5%−22.6%−40.1%
10%−41.0%−65.1%
Avoid these

Common beginner mistakes

Trading every session

Fatigue leads to forced trades. Pick hours that suit your routine.

Moving the stop

Widening a stop turns a planned small loss into a large one.

Ignoring news

Rate decisions and jobs data can jump price through your stop.

Max leverage

High leverage means a small move can wipe out margin.

Copying signals blindly

Without understanding the setup you cannot judge when it fails.

Unlicensed apps

Withdrawals and disputes are hardest with unregulated offshore platforms.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+Can a beginner make money in forex?

Some do, many don't. Studies published by regulated brokers commonly show most retail CFD accounts lose money. Treat the first months as education funded by small, controlled risk.

+Which forex pair is best for beginners?

Liquid majors such as EUR/USD usually have the lowest spreads and smoother movement. In India, residents use exchange-listed pairs such as USD/INR.

+How long does it take to learn forex?

Basic mechanics take days; a consistent, reviewed process usually takes months of demo and small live practice.

+Do I need a strategy or indicators?

You need rules. Indicators are optional; support/resistance and candles are enough to practise a first plan.
