Forex chart patterns every beginner should recognise

Chart patterns are shapes made by many candles that show the balance between buyers and sellers shifting. Candlestick patterns describe one to three candles; chart patterns describe the bigger picture.

Key takeaways
  • Reversal patterns (head & shoulders, double top/bottom) appear after a trend.
  • Continuation patterns (flags, triangles) are pauses inside a trend.
  • A pattern is only confirmed when price breaks its neckline or boundary.
  • The stop goes where the pattern would be proven wrong.

Continuation

Continuation patterns

Bull / bear flag

A sharp move, then a small tilted channel against it. A break out of the flag often resumes the move.

Ascending triangle

Flat resistance with rising lows — buyers pushing harder each time.

Descending triangle

Flat support with falling highs — sellers gaining control.

Symmetrical triangle

Converging highs and lows. Direction comes from the breakout, so wait for it.

Rising / falling wedge

A sloped squeeze that often breaks against its slope — a rising wedge tends to break down.

Plan it

How to plan a chart-pattern trade

  1. 1
    Wait for the break

Enter only after a candle closes beyond the neckline or boundary.

  2. 2
    Set the stop

Behind the last swing that would invalidate the pattern.

  3. 3
    Measure the target

Many traders project the pattern's height from the breakout point as a rough guide.

  4. 4
    Size the trade

Use the stop distance in the lot size calculator so the loss stays planned.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+Which chart pattern is most reliable?

No pattern is reliable on its own. Patterns that form at clear support/resistance on higher timeframes and break with strong candles tend to be cleaner.

+What is a false breakout?

Price breaks the pattern then quickly returns inside it. Waiting for a candle close and avoiding major news reduces, but never removes, false breaks.

+Are chart patterns and candlestick patterns the same?

No. Candlestick patterns use one to three candles; chart patterns are formed by many candles over a longer period.
