Forex vs crypto: which market fits you?
Both markets let you trade price movements from a phone, but they behave very differently. Here is a calm, side-by-side look so you can choose what to learn first.

- Forex is the largest, most liquid market and runs 24 hours on weekdays.
- Crypto trades 24/7 and usually moves much more sharply.
- Regulation differs: forex has long-established regulators; crypto rules are still evolving in many countries.
- Whichever you choose, start on a demo and size trades from your stop-loss.
Forex vs crypto at a glance
| Forex | Crypto | |
|---|---|---|
| Daily volume | About $7.5 trillion (BIS 2022) | Far smaller, varies widely |
| Hours | 24 hours, Monday–Friday | 24/7 including weekends |
| Typical daily move (majors / BTC) | Often under 1% | Often several percent |
| What drives price | Interest rates, inflation, economic data | Adoption, sentiment, liquidity, news |
| Regulation | Mature regulators in major centres | Still developing in many countries |
| Costs | Spread, commission, swap | Spread, exchange fees, funding fees |
Volatility cuts both ways
Bigger moves mean bigger potential gains and bigger potential losses. A position size that feels small on EUR/USD can be very large on a crypto coin that moves 10% in a day.
That is why the same rule applies to both: decide where your stop-loss goes first, then size the trade so hitting it costs only a small, planned part of your account.
Local rules to check
In India, residents may trade only rupee pairs and permitted crosses on recognised Indian exchanges; the RBI's alert list names unauthorised forex platforms. Crypto gains are taxed at 30% with 1% TDS on transfers.
In Pakistan, the State Bank has repeatedly said virtual currencies are not legal tender and has warned the public about them, while online forex with offshore brokers is not authorised by the SECP. Rules change, so check the regulator's own site.
How to decide what to learn first
Forex: fixed sessions, scheduled news and smoother majors.
Crypto is open, but weekend liquidity can be thin.
Candlesticks, support/resistance and risk rules work in both.
Frequently asked questions
+Is forex safer than crypto?
Neither is safe; both carry high risk. Forex majors usually move less per day, while crypto is typically more volatile.
+Can I trade forex and crypto with the same strategy?
Chart skills transfer, but stop distances and position sizes must be adjusted for crypto's larger moves.
+Which is better for beginners?
Many beginners find forex majors easier to practise because of tighter spreads and steadier moves, but a demo account is the right start either way.
