How to use a forex demo account
A demo account lets you practise with virtual money on real prices. Used like a game it teaches bad habits; used like a test it is the cheapest education in trading.

- Set the demo balance close to what you would really trade.
- Follow written rules and journal every trade.
- Aim for 30+ trades under one plan before judging it.
- Demo fills and emotions differ from live trading.
Make the demo realistic
If you plan to start with $200, do not practise with $100,000. A huge virtual balance hides the effect of position size and makes reckless trades feel normal.
Use the same pairs, sessions and platform you would use live, so the habits transfer directly.
A simple practice plan
- 1Week 1: learn the platform
Place, modify and close orders. Set stops and targets every time.
- 2Week 2: one strategy
Pick one setup and trade only that, with written rules.
- 3Week 3: risk discipline
Size every trade at 1% with the lot size calculator.
- 4Week 4: review
Check win rate, average risk-reward and rule breaks in your journal.
What to track
| Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Win rate | Compare with the break-even win rate for your risk-reward. |
| Average R | Shows whether winners are bigger than losers. |
| Rule breaks | The habit you most need to fix. |
| Max drawdown | How deep the worst losing run went. |
How demo differs from live
If you later go live, many educators suggest starting with the smallest size available so the emotional jump is small. Check your local rules first.
Real money brings fear and greed that a demo cannot copy.
Live orders can slip, especially around news.
Check that the demo uses the same spreads and swaps as the live account.
