How inflation and CPI data move currencies
Inflation data moves currencies mainly because it changes what traders expect central banks to do with interest rates. A CPI number far from the forecast can move major pairs sharply within seconds.

- Higher-than-expected inflation often lifts rate-hike expectations, which can support the currency.
- Lower-than-expected inflation can do the opposite.
- Core CPI excludes food and energy and is watched closely by central banks.
- The surprise versus forecast matters more than the number itself.
From CPI to currency price
- 1CPI is released
It shows how fast consumer prices are rising.
- 2Compared with forecast
Traders compare actual with the consensus forecast on the economic calendar.
- 3Rate expectations shift
Hotter inflation raises the chance of higher rates (or fewer cuts); cooler inflation lowers it.
- 4Currency reprices
Money moves toward the currency whose rate outlook improved.
Headline vs core, monthly vs yearly
| Measure | What it includes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Headline CPI | All items | What consumers feel; swings with fuel and food. |
| Core CPI | Excludes food and energy | Better view of underlying inflation; central banks watch it. |
| m/m | Change vs last month | Fast signal of new pressure. |
| y/y | Change vs a year ago | The headline figure most news quotes. |
When US CPI comes out in IST and PKT

Risk notice
Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.
If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.
Frequently asked questions
+Why did the currency fall after high inflation?
If traders expected an even higher number, or believe the central bank won't respond, the currency can fall despite a high reading.
+Should beginners trade CPI releases?
Spreads widen and price can jump past stops. Many beginners prefer to stay flat during the release and trade after the first move settles.
+Do India's or Pakistan's CPI reports move major pairs?
Not usually. They mainly affect INR and PKR expectations and local markets.
