Market structure: reading trends with highs and lows

Before indicators, patterns or news, there is structure: the sequence of swing highs and lows. It tells you whether the market is trending up, trending down or ranging — and when that may be changing.

Key takeaways
  • Uptrend: higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL).
  • Downtrend: lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL).
  • Break of structure (BOS): price breaks the last swing in the trend's direction — continuation.
  • Change of character: price breaks the last swing against the trend — a possible shift.
Three states

Uptrend, downtrend and range

StateSwing patternTypical approach
UptrendHH + HLLook for buys on pullbacks to higher lows.
DowntrendLH + LLLook for sells on rallies to lower highs.
RangeEqual highs and lowsTrade the edges or wait for a breakout.
Breaks

Break of structure vs change of character

Break of structure (BOS)

In an uptrend, price closing above the last higher high confirms the trend continues.

Change of character (CHoCH)

In an uptrend, price closing below the last higher low is the first sign the trend may be ending.

Confirm on closes

A wick through a swing is weaker than a candle close beyond it.

How to mark structure on your chart

  1. 1
    Start on a higher timeframe

Mark obvious swing highs and lows on the 4-hour or daily chart.

  2. 2
    Label them

Write HH, HL, LH, LL — it forces you to see the trend honestly.

  3. 3
    Trade with structure

Use the lower timeframe only for entries in the higher-timeframe direction.

  4. 4
    Combine with levels

Swing points often become support and resistance.

Risk notice

Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.

If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+What counts as a swing high?

A high with lower highs on both sides. Bigger, clearer swings on higher timeframes matter more.

+Is market structure the same as SMC?

Smart money concepts (SMC) use structure terms like BOS and CHoCH, but structure itself is classic price action.

+Do I need indicators with market structure?

No. Many traders use only structure, levels and candles.
