Multiple timeframe analysis for forex
A 5-minute chart can look like a strong uptrend while the daily chart sits right under major resistance. Multiple timeframe analysis means checking the bigger picture first, so your entries agree with it.

- Use three timeframes: a higher one for direction, a middle one for setups, a lower one for entries.
- A common ratio is about 4–6× between each timeframe.
- Mark key levels on the higher timeframe — they matter more than lower-timeframe levels.
- If timeframes disagree, waiting is a valid decision.
Popular timeframe combinations
| Style | Direction | Setup | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swing | Weekly | Daily | 4-hour |
| Day trading | Daily | 1-hour | 15-minute |
| Intraday | 4-hour | 15-minute | 5-minute |
The top-down process, step by step
- 1Higher timeframe: trend and levels
Is price making higher highs or lower lows? Mark the major support and resistance zones.
- 2Middle timeframe: setup
Look for a pullback to a level, a chart pattern, or a trend line test that agrees with the higher trend.
- 3Lower timeframe: entry
Wait for a confirming candle or small break of structure, then place the stop beyond it.
- 4Size the trade
Use the stop distance to calculate lots so risk stays fixed.
Mistakes with multiple timeframes
Switching charts until one 'agrees' with the trade you already wanted is bias, not analysis.
Three timeframes is plenty. More creates conflicting signals and hesitation.
Buying a lower-timeframe breakout straight into daily resistance is a common way to get trapped.
Risk notice
Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.
If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.
Frequently asked questions
+What is the best timeframe for beginners?
Higher timeframes (1-hour and above) move slower and give more time to think, which suits most beginners.
+What if the timeframes disagree?
Skip the trade or wait. Disagreement often means the market is in transition.
+Do I need indicators for top-down analysis?
No. Trend structure and key levels are enough; indicators are optional confirmation.
