Volume in forex: what tick volume really tells you
Stocks have a central exchange that reports total volume. Spot forex doesn't — it trades across many banks and brokers. What your platform shows is usually tick volume: the number of price changes, not the amount traded.

- Spot forex is decentralised, so there is no single true volume figure.
- Tick volume counts price updates per candle from your broker's feed.
- Tick volume often rises and falls with real activity, so it can still be useful.
- Use it as context, not as a stand-alone signal.
Real volume vs tick volume
| Exchange volume | Tick volume | |
|---|---|---|
| Measures | Contracts or shares traded | Number of price changes |
| Source | Central exchange | Your broker's price feed |
| Same for everyone? | Yes | No — varies by broker |
| Available in spot forex? | No | Yes (MT4/MT5 volume) |
How traders use tick volume
Rising tick volume on a breakout suggests real participation; low volume breakouts fail more often.
A huge volume spike after a long move can mark climax buying or selling.
Volume bars clearly show quiet Asian hours vs the active London–New York overlap.
Limitations to remember
- 1Broker-specific
Two brokers can show different tick volume for the same candle.
- 2Not size
One huge order and one tiny order both count as one tick.
- 3Futures alternative
Currency futures on exchanges (like CME) publish real volume, which some traders reference.
Risk notice
Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.
If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.
Frequently asked questions
+Does forex have volume?
Not centrally. Platforms show tick volume, which counts price updates rather than traded amounts.
+Is tick volume reliable?
Research and experience suggest it often tracks real activity, but it is an approximation.
+Which volume indicator is best for forex?
The simple volume histogram is enough for most; complex volume indicators inherit tick-volume limits.
