ATR indicator: set stop-losses that fit the market
ATR tells you how far a pair typically moves per candle. It says nothing about direction — but it is one of the most practical tools for deciding where a stop-loss should go and how big a position can be.

- True range = the largest of: high − low, |high − previous close|, |low − previous close|.
- ATR is the average of true range, usually over 14 candles.
- A stop closer than about 1× ATR is often hit by normal noise.
- Wider ATR stops need smaller lot sizes to keep the same dollar risk.
What an ATR value means
If EUR/USD on the 1-hour chart shows ATR(14) = 0.0012, the pair has moved about 12 pips per hour on average over the last 14 hours. On USD/JPY, ATR = 0.25 means about 25 pips. ATR rises during news and active sessions and falls in quiet hours.
Placing a stop-loss with ATR
- 1Find the structural level
Start with the swing low (for buys) or swing high (for sells) that would prove the idea wrong.
- 2Add an ATR buffer
Place the stop a fraction of ATR (for example 0.5×) beyond that level so normal wicks don't hit it.
- 3Check the distance
If the stop is less than about 1× ATR from entry, it may be too tight for current volatility.
- 4Size from the stop
Enter the stop distance in pips into the lot size calculator so risk stays fixed.
Same risk, different volatility
The dollar risk stays the same; only the position size changes. That is how ATR keeps you consistent when markets speed up.
| Market | ATR stop | Risk | Approx. lots (EUR/USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quiet | 15 pips | $20 | 0.13 |
| Normal | 25 pips | $20 | 0.08 |
| Volatile | 40 pips | $20 | 0.05 |
Risk notice
Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.
If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.
Frequently asked questions
+What ATR period should I use?
14 is the default and works for most timeframes. Shorter periods react faster but are noisier.
+Can ATR tell me the trend?
No. ATR only measures how much price moves, not which way.
+What is an ATR trailing stop?
A stop that follows price at a fixed multiple of ATR (for example 2×) to lock in gains as the trend continues.
