Bollinger Bands for forex beginners
Bollinger Bands wrap price in an envelope that widens when the market is volatile and narrows when it is quiet. They help you see when price is stretched and when a big move may be building.

- Default settings: 20-period simple moving average with bands 2 standard deviations away.
- Touching a band is not a signal by itself — strong trends 'walk' along a band.
- A squeeze (very narrow bands) often comes before a bigger move, but not its direction.
- Bands work best combined with trend and support/resistance.
The three bands
Because the bands use standard deviation, they expand when price swings widely and contract when price is calm. That makes them a volatility gauge as much as a price tool.

Middle band minus two standard deviations.
Common Bollinger Band situations
| What you see | What it often means |
|---|---|
| Squeeze (bands very narrow) | Low volatility; a breakout may follow. Wait for direction. |
| Price walking the upper band | Strong uptrend — selling just because it touched the band is risky. |
| Price bouncing between bands | Ranging market; mean reversion toward the middle band is more common. |
| Close outside, then back inside | Possible exhaustion, stronger at a known support/resistance zone. |
Beginner mistakes
- 1Treating bands as walls
Price can stay outside or along a band for a long time in trends.
- 2Guessing squeeze direction
Let the breakout candle close first.
- 3Stacking similar indicators
Bands plus several other volatility tools repeat the same information.
- 4No stop-loss
Mean-reversion trades fail sharply when a trend starts — always size from a stop.
