How to use the RSI indicator in forex
RSI is one of the most popular indicators, and one of the most misused. Used properly, it helps you judge momentum rather than predict exact tops and bottoms.

- RSI measures recent momentum on a 0–100 scale, usually over 14 candles.
- Above 70 is called overbought and below 30 oversold — but strong trends can stay there.
- The 50 line helps confirm trend direction.
- Divergence warns that momentum is fading; confirm it with price before acting.
What RSI measures
Developed by J. Welles Wilder in 1978, RSI compares the size of recent up-moves with recent down-moves. The result moves between 0 and 100.
Formula: RSI = 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + RS), where RS is the average gain divided by the average loss over the chosen period (14 by default).
Reading 70, 50 and 30
In a strong uptrend RSI can stay between 40 and 80 for weeks. Many traders use 'oversold' dips toward 40 as pullback opportunities in an uptrend rather than counter-trend signals.
| Reading | Common meaning | Beginner mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Above 70 | Strong upward momentum, possibly stretched | Selling only because RSI is high |
| Around 50 | Balance; crossing helps confirm trend | Ignoring it completely |
| Below 30 | Strong downward momentum, possibly stretched | Buying only because RSI is low |
Bullish and bearish divergence
Divergence can last a long time before price turns. Wait for a price signal — a break of structure or a reversal candle at a key level.
Price makes a higher high, RSI makes a lower high — upward momentum is weakening.
Price makes a lower low, RSI makes a higher low — selling pressure is weakening.
A simple RSI checklist
- 1Trend first
Use a 200 moving average or swing structure to define direction.
- 2Location
Look for price at support or resistance.
- 3Momentum
Check RSI: pullback toward 40 in uptrends, toward 60 in downtrends, or divergence.
- 4Trigger & size
Wait for a candle signal, set the stop beyond the level, size from the stop.
Frequently asked questions
+What is the best RSI setting for forex?
14 is the standard. Shorter settings react faster but give more false signals.
+Does RSI above 70 mean sell?
Not by itself. It shows strong momentum; in a strong trend price can keep rising.
+Is RSI a leading or lagging indicator?
It is built from past prices, so it reacts to momentum rather than predicting it.
