How much money do you need to start forex trading?

Many brokers let you open an account with very little. The better question is how much you can afford to lose while learning, and whether your account is big enough to use small, fixed risk per trade.

Key takeaways
  • Start on a demo account — it costs nothing and teaches the platform.
  • Only fund money you can afford to lose completely.
  • With 1% risk, a $100 account risks $1 per trade — micro lots (0.01) make that possible.
  • A small account grows slowly; trying to grow it fast is how most small accounts are lost.
What size can do

What different account sizes allow (1% risk)

On EUR/USD a 0.01 lot moves about $0.10 per pip, so a 20-pip stop at 0.01 lots risks about $2. Very small accounts can't always keep risk at 1%, which is one reason demo practice comes first.

AccountRisk per trade (1%)EUR/USD lots with a 20-pip stop
$50$0.500.00 (below the 0.01 minimum)
$100$10.01 (risks $2 — 2%)
$500$50.02
$1,000$100.05
A sensible path

A step-by-step way to start

  1. 1
    Demo for 30–50 trades

Follow one written plan until results are consistent.

  2. 2
    Start small with real money

A small live account teaches real emotions with limited damage.

  3. 3
    Keep risk fixed

Use the same % risk per trade, sized from the stop.

  4. 4
Add money only from a plan

Never deposit more to 'win back' losses.

Watch out

Traps for small accounts

High leverage

Leverage lets a small account open big positions, which magnifies losses as much as gains.

Deposit bonuses

Bonuses can come with conditions that make withdrawing your own money harder.

Doubling challenges

'Grow $100 to $1,000 this month' plans require oversized risk and usually end in a blown account.

Before you trade

Risk notice

Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.

If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

+Can I start forex with 1,000 rupees?

Indian residents may trade only permitted currency derivatives on recognised Indian exchanges; funding overseas forex platforms is not permitted by RBI. In Pakistan, SBP has declared offshore forex platforms illegal. Read the legal guides first.

+Is $100 enough to start?

It's enough to learn with 0.01 lots, but not enough to expect meaningful income. Treat it as tuition.

+What is the minimum lot size?

Most brokers allow 0.01 lots (micro lots). Some offer smaller 'cent' accounts.
