How to write a forex trading plan
A trading plan is a short document that decides your rules before emotions get involved. If you can't write down why you take a trade, you don't yet have a strategy — you have a feeling.

- Keep it short — one page you will actually read.
- Define what, when, how and how much before trading.
- Include a daily loss limit and stop rules, not just entry rules.
- Review the plan monthly using your journal, not after every loss.
A one-page plan you can copy
| Section | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Goal | Practise one strategy consistently for 50 demo trades. |
| Markets | EUR/USD and GBP/USD only. |
| Session | London session, 1–4 PM PKT. |
| Setup | Trend pullback to support with a bullish rejection candle on 1-hour. |
| Risk per trade | 1% of balance, sized with the lot size calculator. |
| Stop & target | Stop beyond the wick; target at least 1.5× the stop. |
| Daily limit | Stop after 2 losses or −2% in a day. |
| No-trade rules | No trades 15 minutes before high-impact news. |
| Review | Every Sunday, read the week's journal. |
Why a written plan helps
Decisions are made calmly before the market opens, not in the heat of a move.
If every trade follows the same rules, your journal shows whether the rules work.
A daily loss limit decided in advance is easier to obey.
How to review and improve the plan
- 1Log every trade
Screenshot, reason, result and whether you followed the rules.
- 2Separate rule-breaks
Losses from broken rules are a discipline issue, not a strategy issue.
- 3Change one thing at a time
Changing many rules at once makes it impossible to know what helped.
Risk notice
Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.
If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.
Frequently asked questions
+How long should a trading plan be?
One page is enough for most beginners. Longer plans tend not to be read.
+Can I change my plan?
Yes, but on a schedule after reviewing data — not in the middle of a trading day.
+Do professional traders use plans?
Disciplined traders generally work from written rules and risk limits.
