Stochastic oscillator for forex, explained simply
The stochastic oscillator compares the latest close with the recent high-low range. Near the top of the range it reads high; near the bottom it reads low. It measures where price closes, not where it will go next.

- %K = (close − lowest low) ÷ (highest high − lowest low) × 100 over the lookback, usually 14 periods.
- %D is a moving average of %K, used as a signal line.
- Above 80 = closing near the top of the range; below 20 = near the bottom.
- In strong trends stochastic can stay overbought or oversold for a long time.
What the numbers mean
| Reading | What it says | What it does not say |
|---|---|---|
| Above 80 | Price is closing near the top of its recent range. | That price must fall. |
| Below 20 | Price is closing near the bottom of its recent range. | That price must rise. |
| %K crosses %D | Short-term momentum shifted. | That a trend has reversed. |
How traders use stochastic
In an uptrend, wait for stochastic to dip toward oversold, then look for a bullish candle at support. This trades with the trend, not against it.
In a clear sideways market, overbought near resistance and oversold near support can confirm range trades.
Price makes a new low but stochastic makes a higher low — selling momentum is weakening. Confirm with structure first.
Common stochastic mistakes
- 1Selling every overbought reading
In a strong uptrend, 'overbought' simply means strong. Fighting it is costly.
- 2Using it on every timeframe at once
Pick a main timeframe and keep the indicator consistent.
- 3Stacking similar indicators
Stochastic, RSI and Williams %R all measure similar things; adding all three gives false confidence.
Risk notice
Forex and CFD trading is high risk. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and regulated brokers' own disclosures typically show that most retail CFD accounts lose money. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose. TradeFather is an independent education and tools provider — not a broker or financial adviser — and does not provide forex signals or execute trades.
If you live in India or Pakistan: RBI does not permit residents to fund overseas online forex/CFD platforms, and SBP has declared offshore forex, margin and CFD platforms illegal for residents. This guide explains how markets work; it is not a recommendation to open such an account.
Frequently asked questions
+What are the best stochastic settings?
14, 3, 3 is the common default (slow stochastic). Faster settings give more signals but more noise.
+Stochastic or RSI?
Both are momentum oscillators. Stochastic reacts faster to the range; RSI is smoother. Use one and learn it well.
+Is stochastic good for 1-minute charts?
On very low timeframes it whipsaws a lot. It tends to be cleaner on 15-minute and higher charts.
